How this is calculated
Deduction = (miles driven Jan 1 – Jun 30, 2026 × $0.725) + (miles driven Jul 1 – Dec 31, 2026 × $0.76).
The tax saving is the difference between your estimated federal tax with and without the deduction. It includes both income tax and self-employment tax, because mileage lowers your business profit, which both taxes are based on.
If you don’t know how your miles split across the year, divide your total by two.

Common questions
What is the IRS mileage rate for 2026?
72.5 cents per mile for business driving from Jan 1 – Jun 30, 2026, and 76 cents per mile from Jul 1 – Dec 31, 2026. The IRS raised the rate mid-year because of higher fuel prices, so use the rate that matches when you drove.
What miles count as business miles?
Driving to meet clients, between jobs or deliveries, to pick up supplies and to a temporary work location. A regular commute from home to a fixed workplace doesn’t count. For gig drivers, miles driven while working on the app generally count.
What records do I need?
A log with the date, start and end location (or odometer readings), miles and business purpose for each trip. A mileage-tracking app that records trips automatically meets this if you review it.
Can I deduct gas as well?
Not if you use the standard mileage rate. It already covers gas, oil, repairs, tires, insurance, registration and depreciation. You can still deduct business parking fees and tolls separately.
Standard mileage or actual expenses?
If you want to use the standard rate for a car, you generally must choose it in the first year you use that car for business. After that you can switch between methods in later years, with some limits.
